Overview
The Department of Social Work at Don Bosco College, Mannuthy, is committed to nurturing compassionate, competent, and socially responsible professionals dedicated to creating meaningful change in society. Guided by the principles of social justice, human dignity, and inclusive development, the department offers the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) programme under the University of Calicut, providing students with a transformative educational experience that blends academic excellence with community engagement.
The three-year undergraduate programme is thoughtfully designed to provide a strong foundation in the theories, principles, and practices of professional social work. The curriculum encompasses diverse areas such as social welfare, human rights, community development, social policy, counselling, social research, and sustainable development, enabling students to develop a comprehensive understanding of contemporary social issues and effective intervention strategies.
A distinctive feature of the programme is its emphasis on experiential learning, where classroom instruction is complemented by extensive fieldwork, community outreach programmes, internships, rural camps, and institutional visits. These hands-on experiences empower students to translate theoretical knowledge into meaningful practice while cultivating empathy, leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
The department fosters a vibrant learning environment through seminars, workshops, extension activities, awareness campaigns, and collaborations with non-governmental organizations, healthcare institutions, and community development agencies. These initiatives encourage students to become proactive agents of social transformation and responsible citizens committed to serving society with integrity and compassion.
Graduates of the Bachelor of Social Work programme are well prepared to pursue rewarding careers in non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government departments, healthcare institutions, educational organizations, corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, community development agencies, counselling services, and human resource management. The programme also provides a strong academic foundation for higher studies, including the Master of Social Work (MSW) and other specialized postgraduate programmes, opening pathways to leadership roles in the social development sector.
